What is an LCD TV?
Previously television sets meant a huge box with a cathode ray tube at the back that took most of the space of your TV table. But now, with the advancement of technology, the LCD televisions have replaced the old idea of television and have provided us with an all new viewing experience. The cathode ray tubes have been replaces by much thinner LCD televisions which offer with a much better picture quality and saves space. They are also quite portable as compared to the old television sets and can be easily moved from one place to another.
An LCD television stands for Liquid Crystal Display and they use a five layer technology to display the high definition motion pictures. The LCD televisions are much lighter in weight than the traditional CRT sets are can be placed at any place and even on the wall, thus making it much portable. The LCD televisions also features non reflective screens which makes it possible to view anywhere like in front of a window or a light source without any disturbances unlike the regular CRT television sets.
The LCD TV’s use the unique five layer technology to bring alive the pictures. The layers include a polarized glass, a backlight, liquid crystal solution, a second sheet of polarized glass and a colored pixel mask. Each pixel of the LCD screen bears a transistor that receives the signal from a cable or an antenna and then arranges the crystals accordingly through voltage variation. The arrangement of the crystals allows the backlight to flow through each of the pixels thus creating the picture on the screen. The LCD televisions are available in a wide range of sizes starting from smaller ones like the 14” up to big screen with almost a 100” display.
Another favorable characteristic of the LCD televisions is that they consume much less electricity than the plasma televisions or the regular CRT televisions and are hence preferred by many to save power consumption. It had just been hardly a few couple of years that LCD televisions appeared in the market, but within a short span of time it has impressed its viewers and has found application in a number of places nowadays. Most of the offices and public places have switched to LCD televisions because of their portability and the excellent high definition picture quality that it provides. While shopping for an LCD TV it must be kept in mind to look for a wide viewing angle so that the colors in the screen do not appear to be hazy when viewed at a large angle from the centre.
The total life period of an LCD TV has been estimated to be about 60,000 hours and the backlight burns out after this approximate period of time. But for household purposes it is considered sufficient as 60,000 correspond to almost 25 years according to average household viewing. The only drawback of the LCD TV’s is it price and sometimes the prices are too high to opt for.
